There’s no single, definite answer to how long we can use an end mill because many factors will affect its service life.

If it is high-speed steel end mill processing ordinary steel: the end mill can last 8-15 hours

If it is tungsten carbide end mill processing ordinary materials: end mill can last 20-50 hours, or even longer.

There will also be requirements for the material of the workpiece:

If the steel parts processed are ordinary steel, the carbide end mill can work for about 8-15 hours, quenched steel and alloy steel, and high-speed steel can only work for 3-5 hours.

If it is processing aluminum alloy, the end mill can work for about 15-25 hours, and the cemented carbide end mill can even process aluminum alloy for 100 hours

For roughing, we need to remove materials quickly. We set large parameters, which makes the tool wear fast. We can use high – speed steel end mills for about 3 – 8 hours.

When performing finishing, we set small parameters as required. The tool wear is slow in this case. We can use the high – speed steel end mill for about 8 – 15 hours.
